Without seeing an hydraulic circuit diagram it’s difficult to diagnose the fault but required pressure on the ram return side will be far less than on the downstroke (splitter) side under normal operating conditions and there’s probably no relief valve on the return side.
By using the latter to lift the machine you’ve overpressurised it, bursting has probably solved the problem somewhat drastically though.
Best replace the hose and vent the air from both sides of the cylinder. Check for leakage of the piston rod seals (where the rod comes out of the cylinder).
